Tips for boosting mental health

🍃Set up a getaway.
It could be camping with friends or a trip to the tropics. The act of planning a vacation and having something to look forward to can boost your overall happiness for up to 8 weeks!

🍃Work your strengths.
Do something you're good at to build self-confidence, then tackle a tougher task.

🍃You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Think of something in your life you want to improve, and figure out what you can do to take a step in the right direction.

🍃Sometimes, we don't need to add new activities to get more pleasure. We just need to soak up the joy in the ones we've already got. Trying to be optimistic doesn't mean ignoring the uglier sides of life. It just means focusing on the positive as much as possible

🍃Take time to laugh. Hang out with a funny friend, watch a comedy or check out cute videos online. Laughter helps reduce anxiety.

🍃Go off the grid. Leave your smart phone at home for a day and disconnect from constant emails, alerts, and other interruptions. Spend time doing something fun with someone face-to-face.

🍃Dance around while you do your housework. Not only will you get chores done, but dancing reduces levels of cortisol (the stress hormone), and increases endorphins (the body's "feel-good" chemicals).
Also exercises.

🍃Has something been bothering you? Let it all out…on paper. Writing about upsetting experiences can reduce symptoms of depression.

🍃What lies before us and what lies behind us are small matters compared to what lies within us. And when you bring what is within out into the world, miracles happen.” - Henry David Thoreau. Practice mindfulness by staying "in the present."

🍃 Work some omega-3 fatty acids into your diet–they are linked to decreased rates of depression and schizophrenia among their many benefits. Fish oil supplements work, but eating your omega-3s in foods like wild salmon, flaxseeds or walnuts also helps build healthy gut bacteria.

🍃Practice forgiveness - even if it's just forgiving that person who cut you off during your commute. People who forgive have better mental health and report being more satisfied with their lives.

🍃What appear to be calamities are often the sources of fortune." - Disraeli. Try to find the silver lining in something kind of cruddy that happened recently.

🍃Take 30 minutes to go for a walk in nature - it could be a stroll through a park, or a hike in the woods. Research shows that being in nature can increase energy levels, reduce depression and boost well-being.

🍃Do your best to enjoy 15 minutes of sunshine, and apply sunscreen. Sunlight synthesizes Vitamin D, which experts believe is a mood elevator.

Insomnia

INSOMNIA
overview

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that can make it hard to fall asleep, hard to stay asleep, or cause you to wake up too early and not be able to get back to sleep. You may still feel tired when you wake up. Insomnia can sap not only your energy level and mood but also your health, work performance and quality of life.

condition can be short-term (acute) or can last a long time (chronic). It may also come and go.

Acute insomnia lasts from 1 night to a few weeks. Insomnia is chronic when it happens at least 3 nights a week for 3 months or more.

There are two types of insomnia:

Primary insomnia:
This means your sleep problems aren’t linked to any other health condition or problem.

Secondary insomnia:
This means you have trouble sleeping because of a health condition (like asthma, depression, arthritis, cancer, or heartburn); pain; medication; or substance use (like alcohol).

MAY, MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH

May 2020 is Mental Health Awareness Month.
Did you know…
Close to 800 000 people die due to suicide every year.
Did you know…
Suicide is the second leading cause of death in 15-29-year-olds.
Did you know…
Globally, an estimated 264 million people are affected by depression.
Did you know…
Bipolar Disorder effects about 45 million people worldwide.
Did you know…
Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder, affecting 20 million people worldwide.
Despite these incredibly high statistics, did you know…
Between 76% and 85% of people with mental disorders receive no treatment for their disorder due to lack of funding to mental health services.
1 in 4 people every single year. That is one quarter of the population. This is your son or daughter; this is your mum or dad. This is your sister or brother. This is someone you spend most of your time with. This is your teacher who seems to have it all together. This is your friend that has a permanent happy face. This is your colleague who appears to have everything or the ‘perfect’ life. This is the person stood next to you waiting for a train, considering jumping. This is the person who always wears long sleeves, even when it is the warmest day of the year. This is the person you think drinks too much and goes out partying too much. This is the person who goes out of their way everyday to make others happy yet goes home every evening crying themselves to sleep.
Mental illness might not directly be your battle. But mental illness is a battle someone close to you is contending with every single day.
A smile can hide some of the darkest of thoughts, and the most debilitating feelings.
Check in on those around you, check in on your happy friend, check in on your mother or father.
A simple, “How are you doing?” opens a conversation for someone to turn around and say “Actually, I am not doing so good” …
Let us work together this month, and every month to TALK about it.
Let us work together to make sure mental illness does not take any more lives. The silent killer.
Let us work together to make sure that you are not listening to the eulogy of someone close to you and are instead listening to that person telling you about the demons they are facing.
Please, let us not lose any more lives to suicide, to mental illness.
My name is symon, I am 20 years old, 2 years ago I nearly lost my life to suicide.
believe that journey wasn't easy
Now, I fight every day to make sure nobody else does.
