INSOMNIA
overview
Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that can make it hard to fall asleep, hard to stay asleep, or cause you to wake up too early and not be able to get back to sleep. You may still feel tired when you wake up. Insomnia can sap not only your energy level and mood but also your health, work performance and quality of life.
condition can be short-term (acute) or can last a long time (chronic). It may also come and go.
Acute insomnia lasts from 1 night to a few weeks. Insomnia is chronic when it happens at least 3 nights a week for 3 months or more.
There are two types of insomnia:
Primary insomnia:
This means your sleep problems aren’t linked to any other health condition or problem.
Secondary insomnia:
This means you have trouble sleeping because of a health condition (like asthma, depression, arthritis, cancer, or heartburn); pain; medication; or substance use (like alcohol).

MAY, MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH
May 2020 is Mental Health Awareness Month.

Between 76% and 85% of people with mental disorders receive no treatment for their disorder due to lack of funding to mental health services.
1 in 4 people every single year. That is one quarter of the population. This is your son or daughter; this is your mum or dad. This is your sister or brother. This is someone you spend most of your time with. This is your teacher who seems to have it all together. This is your friend that has a permanent happy face. This is your colleague who appears to have everything or the ‘perfect’ life. This is the person stood next to you waiting for a train, considering jumping. This is the person who always wears long sleeves, even when it is the warmest day of the year. This is the person you think drinks too much and goes out partying too much. This is the person who goes out of their way everyday to make others happy yet goes home every evening crying themselves to sleep.
Mental illness might not directly be your battle. But mental illness is a battle someone close to you is contending with every single day.
A smile can hide some of the darkest of thoughts, and the most debilitating feelings.
Check in on those around you, check in on your happy friend, check in on your mother or father.
A simple, “How are you doing?” opens a conversation for someone to turn around and say “Actually, I am not doing so good” …
Let us work together this month, and every month to TALK about it.
Let us work together to make sure mental illness does not take any more lives. The silent killer.
Let us work together to make sure that you are not listening to the eulogy of someone close to you and are instead listening to that person telling you about the demons they are facing.
Please, let us not lose any more lives to suicide, to mental illness.
